Quixotic Quantum Quandary

Q³: Loco Causa

Lately, the Atomic Toasters site has been inundated with spam comments, which we have perhaps mentioned. Because of such, I have been engaged in a Quixotic Quest of my own, an attempt to slowly rid us of this scourge. And I do mean rid, because although the spam almost entirely shows up as a ‘pending’ comment, which can either be approved, marked as spam, or deleted, there are additional steps to try to ensure it stays gone. It is just somewhat involved. See, in theory, if you mark something as spam, it helps refine the spam filter to prevent similar comments from making it through. At least I think, since this seems to work absolutely not at all. So the comment gets marked as spam, then I go through the spam tab, and click on the IP address for that comment. That filters the spam by only comments from that IP. Then you can block it, so they can’t spam from there anymore! Often, it is just a single comment from a single IP, but every now and again, jackpot!, ten or so spams from one IP! Those are fun. But, this means I have time to block something like 10 spammers a day, I mean, I have a day job. And if my math is semi-correct, an IP sequence that consists of 4 three digit groups (123.456.789.000), means that there are something like 20,922,789,888,000 different IPs out there, no small measure of which are probably available to a spammer…

But enough about me! Let’s talk about Recurveman, and his great success with last week’s Quandary! He was right on the money, and mdharrell swooped in with the exact image! Which seems to indicate to me that despite someone nabbing such a cool free item so quick, the ad image still floats in the ether of the webs. (If you missed it, it was a photo enlarger!) If you think you have what it takes for such great levels of success, follow in their footsteps, and tell is in the comments what this week’s item is!

Remember, if you happen to have access to any oddball sort of tech related items, or just a blurry camera and an eye for weird photo angles, please don’t hesitate to send your ideas in! Simply email HycoSpeed@gmail.com and throw Q³ in the subject line and I’ll get right on it!

Actually, since the three digit groupings max out at 255, and some other stuff, there are "only" about 3.7 billion usable addresses, which the world will soon run out of, at which point your appliaces will all stop working. except, of course, for the atomic toaster.

    • "…since the three digit groupings max out at 255, and some other stuff…."

As a geologist, I welcome you to your bright future in the world of the semi-quantitative disciplines.

I've got one weird trick that will speed up the spam comment blocking process. If you just block all the IPs, they won't be able to spam from any of them!

      Mr. Helpful, that's you…

    • We actually had this plan that maybe if the quality and frequency of the posts dropped precipitously, the spammers would go away.

      It isn't working.

I'm going to guess that we are looking at the burner and reflector of an acetylene (carbide) lamp as used on an antique car or motorcycle. The shape and glass lens are wrong for a carbide miner's lamp and it looks too big for a bicycle.
Regarding last week's Q³, I'll confess that I've never seen one of those enlargers since my experience is limited to Omega and Beseler kit from the 70s.

I took a printing class in high school that was quite underfunded and they still used one. That was the only reason I knew.

I would agree with the carbide lamp however the glass goes through the metallic housing which leads me away from anything on an automobile.

Possibly an antique theater stage lamp?

  • The proportions have me thinking it's a locomotive headlamp, which would also be in keeping with the title.

Speaking of spam, did you get my email tip about the guy who made the thing do the thing? (His website ends in 7.org) it's from my username at-symbol yahoo period com.

    • There was an email to the tips line about a game playing computer, that the one? I don't recall it having a 7.org though…
