User Input: Making My Efforts Seem Worthless

This is a Rubik’s Cube solver, known as the CubeStormer II, made entirely out of Lego, and powered by a smartphone.

Lego has been around for a long time, and as a result, there have been many opportunities for clever minds to find ways to make remarkable things using nothing more than little plastic blocks that hurt when you step on them in the middle of the night. I once made a car out of Lego. It was pretty crap, but it’s the best I’ve ever managed. I suppose there were  a few things out of Lego Techniks, but that was just following all the directions to the letter, and still largely getting it wrong. Hit the jump to see more of this thing in action.

What’s the coolest machine you’ve ever seen made out of Lego?

    Under 17 turns; that's optimal.

Some cube trivia: simple mathematical analysis demonstrates you reach more permutations at the 18th twist than the cube's topology can support. Therefore, you are never more than 17 twists away from the start position.

More cube trivia: the start pattern is boring; if all you can show for your efforts are 6 solid faces with no pretty patterns, you have no more solved the cube than a person who has memorized the color wheel has become an artist.

    • I've never been able to convince anyone that I'm merely a practitioner of the Piet Mondrian school of Rubik's Cubes.

They're definitely more interesting than the start position.

  • Every day I become more and more convinced that I am an abject moran.

    • It took me years of graduate work to become truly aware of my own idiocy. Others seem to pick up on it shortly after meeting me.

      • "Graduate work", there's the problem. The old, "know more and more about less and less until you know absolutely everything about absolutely nothing."
