Does this make the 8-inch floppy disk the missing link?

    And what about Reel-to-Reel?

    • jeepjeff

Fits between the punch card and the 3.5, much like the 5 1/4.

EDIT: But it also spawned a long side-branch in our imaginary evolutionary tree: the back-up cassette tape.

  • jeepjeff

The 8" might be a side branch and evolutionary dead-end, being an enlargement of the 5 1/4" which developed into the 3.5 pictured. Kinda like Neanderthals.

    • CaptianNemo2001

The 5 1/4 lasted well into the late 90's
From about 91/2 until 1997/8 maybe 99 but I need to look it up.

  • There's so much missing from the front end, beginning with stick drawing in dirt, followed by cave painting.

My employer in the late 90's still had a need for this sort of media.

    • It was also in the late '90s that my university sent everyone a notice that the last publicly-available IBM card reader on campus was soon to be decommissioned, so anyone in need of one had to either queue up immediately or plan on using an outside vendor in the future. Some people were furious.

Where does one go to look for outside vendors of punchcard reading services? It sounds like there might be a good market for that sort of thing, or at least there was a decade and a half ago.

I think there are a few museums that could run those cards for you…

        • Los Alamos, New Mexico, of course, always on the cutting edge of science and technology:

It turns out, no, there is not an App for that. I went looking. However, considering that I have barcode reading apps, my wife uses a Chase app to deposit checks and the whole QR code nonsense, there really could be. In fact, there's at least one implementation of parsing photographs of cards to scan in the data:

At this rate you will be waiting years for the results of the US census. It needs to be like 200 times faster.

I would not be surprised if there was a "line and label" based tree made for different forms of storage… If this laptop could run Autocad decently I would try to make one. Its the UBER obscure stuff that would be hard to track esp if you wanted to include dates. IE 1952-1959.

    • CaptianNemo2001

All right there is no decent map out there so it looks like I will have to make my own… slowly. HW and classes come first.

  • CaptianNemo2001

After experimenting with the laptop… I found that without overclocking the processors I can cool it down to ~61-64 degrees F with out much effort. IE Vacuum cleaner on the air exhaust. I am thinking about adding a cold air intake and a high speed air pump, bigger vacuum cleaner, next to see if I can cool it even more… And then once it is all safely rigged up OC the thing from 1.665 to whatever it can take… Need a different laptop anyways.
