User Input: Cheesy Perfection

Over the weekend, HycoSpeed touched on the fact that there used to be a time when special effects were glorious, hand-crafted things, involving intricate models. When done right, as in the original Star Wars trilogy before the movies got molested and abused like a freshman at a frat party, the old methods of models and close-up cameras can create amazing effects with stunning realism. Both the original Star Trek and Star Trek: TNG relied mostly on model-work, and while that certainly limited the story-telling capabilities, in some ways that makes for a more believable tale.

On the other hand, there were plenty of times when the old classic techniques were… shall we say… terrible. This could be dealt with through extremely good storytelling and talented actors; the Daleks really are just oversized salt-shakers with a plunger sticking out the side, but they had children hiding behind the couch whenever they came on the screen. Sometimes, the quality of special effects are limited by budget. The difference, of course, is how committed the filmmakers are to the quality of their final product.

On the other hand, sometimes people just don’t know what they’re doing, or just don’t care. And that shows in the cheesy, crappy effects; but even then, the cheesiness can sometimes be endearing. Just look at the magic of Mystery Science Theatre 3000!

What movie or TV show had the most deliciously cheesy special effects, either for better or for worse?

A personal favorite of mine. I also enjoyed Shusuke Kaneko's directorial work on the Gamera trilogy.

  • The Professor

I wanted to post a clip of the 'Amazon Women on the Moon' parts from Amazon Women on the Moon, but I couldn't find one. Best cheesy special effects ever.

  • How about season 4 of Airwolf. The one where they shot the shot about the super duper helicopter without using a helicopter. They recycled footage from Seasons 1-3 or used cheesy special effects.

  • Abbott and Costello go to Mars wouldn't be the same if the effects were any good.

What do you get when the Japanese film studio that brought us that beloved, city trampling, friend of children, Gamera AND kick ass samurai films like Zatoichi, the Blind Swordsman and Lone Wolf and Cub decides to merge those genres?

"Daimajin" sounds so bad ass to non-Japanese speakers but it translates simply to something like "big angry demon". Looks like a must-see!

Looks like I will have to find a copy to see it. Because it looks like its worth seeing compared to all the other stuff posted so far.
