Radio room for W6RO aboard the Queen Mary

Since engineered had such a nice post about a maritime radio station, I thought that I’d follow on with this picture of the radio room for W6RO which is located aboard the Queen Mary in Long Beach harbour. It’s operated by volunteers from the Associated Radio Amateurs Of Long Beach. You can find out more from their website.

Is the Queen Mary still there? I visited it years ago when it still had the Spruce Goose next to it, but I gather all that has been packed up and moved elsewhere now. It's a pity, because it was one of my favourite parts of our Disneyland trip when I was a wee lad.

I just looked via google earth and it shows that it was still there in 2011, so I image it's there still.
The Goose got moved up to Oregon, McMinnville as I recall. Yep.. .http://www.evergreenmuseum.org/

The charge an arm and an leg just to tour the ship… An man does it need some paint and repair to the wood work… Was there in 2011 so I can say that indeed the ship is there but I consider it a rip off due to the price they charge to park and then tour the ship… lots of stairs to get from the bow to stern. You have to go back to the dock side and walk to the forward set of stairs to get of the bow from the stern…

I stayed on the Queen Mary for several nights a few weeks ago.

It was very nice. The W6RO radio room was in full operation and the operators were very nice and helpful.

Overall it was a great experience. I didn't have to pay anything to tour the ship (though I was paying to stay in one of the state rooms). I did walk over pretty much every square inch of the ship during my visit.

If you ever get a chance to stay there, I'd go for it.

Keep in mind that if you want to operate the radio station you need a physical copy of your license with you.
