      Ha! Really they are photo detector/multiplier tubes so they absorb light instead of make it. They had a big accident a few years back where one tube collapsed and that caused chain reaction where very many they broke. But they fixed it eventually and even better all the other experiments that are similar learned from it and have procedures to help mitigate the risk now. Sadly I don't know what those are beyond inspection.
