Update from Crowley.com, the tug company tasked with towing the Battleship to Southern California:
“Today’s scheduled final voyage of the USS Iowa from the Port of Richmond has been delayed by a weather system affecting the West Coast. Organizers will reschedule the tow to the Port of Los Angeles and all related activities following the passage of the weather system later this week.”
Well drats. Our original post for today will go live once we get word the tow is a go.
(Ninja edit: The USS Iowa is being towed down to Los Angeles to become a museum ship, and was scheduled to leave today before a weather system made it too dangerous to attempt. An unmanned and unpowered tow can be one of the most sketchy maneuvers at sea. Just ask the Battleship USS Oklahoma BB37, which in spite of having all her access ports welded shut, suddenly sank while under tow from Hawaii.

Whats the story behind the Iowa again? *noobquestion*
Sparky had a good write up on it a few weeks ago, Visit to the Last Battleship. Basically she is moving to a new home as a museum, but is still in the 'ready reserve.'
*no noobquestions, only noobpeople*
I had referenced that in today's original post, but the delay screwed the entire story up.
There's a ninja link back to the story above, but I didn't make it quite obvious enough. I blame last minute rewrites and lack of coffee.
