User Input: Dreams of Freedom

Using a map on the highway has never gone that smoothly for me. Mind you, I'm not usually parked on the side of the road pretending to drive, either.

The Startup from Mr. Shanomi this morning got me thinking about a lot of things — mostly what I’d like to be doing if I didn’t have to work. Sailing around the world sounds pretty damned appealing, but I also suspect that it would only be a matter of time before the constant motion of the boat started to get to me.

More than anything, my personal fantasy involves a convertible, a cute blonde, and a lengthy road-trip. Unfortunately for me, I do not have the requisite convertible, and my cute blonde isn’t as enthusiastic about the idea as I am. Oh, and I do have to work, which puts a significant damper on any scheme I try and come up with. But given the chance, I’d probably hook up a travel trailer behind a classic convertible — say an old Continental? — and head out on the highway.

Of course, that only lasts so long. You eventually have to come home, or at the least eventually stop driving. And once I did, my pursuits would become decidedly more nerdly. I suspect I’d find that before long I’d have a media centre set up that would rival the database on Enterprise. I’d be dedicating a whole bunch of time and money to archiving television shows, mostly because I have become so frustrated with the crap scheduling and programming that I’m seeing on my cable box, and I’m too damn lazy to get a PVR. Well, so far I am. We’ll see if that changes.

If you didn’t have to work, what would be your passion or pursuit that would end up filling your day. In an ideal world, of course.

  • I'd probably spend my days on the 'net, trying to identify cars from obscure angles. Like this eary Fiat 124 Sport Spider, for example.

    • Deartháir

I think it's just a Spider; didn't the Sport Spider have an extra gauge on the right-hand side of the gauge cluster? Or is that just early vs. late?

      • Plus, don't the rubberized inboard visor points, the mirrors, the steering wheel, and (most significantly) the headrests all indicate that this isn't an early model?

        Yup, living that dream….

For a bonus point, where is it that the map indicates?

          • Earth, late Holocene surficial features, mostly anthropic.

        • I don't think that there was ever a distinction between Spider and Sport Spider. I say early vs. late on the basis of the chrome bezel in the center of the dash – those became black in the mid-70s. Hard to go by the steering wheel and headrests, as they are often replaced.

Yes, I'm sorry for getting some Hoon in your Toast.

      • The Professor

I think we just sprung a Hooniverse leak…

        • Deartháir

          Quick, someone reinforce the wall!

          • skitter

            Don't worry! I'm all thumbs!

          • Deartháir

Sweet, go stick it in the dike!(Tee hee hee hee hee!)

I'd build myself a dream music project studio filled with keyboards, synthesizers, samplers, computers, and the like and get lost in creating music.

  • Assuming money wasn't an issue. If I wasn't traveling around the world, on my private jet/yacht, seeing all the races and museums that I want to see, and letting the wife shop (so I could stay married), I would work on becoming a top level 3-gun competitive shooter. There would also be a good bit of time spent driving, working on, and building cars. I would probably get a plane and a private pilot license too. I drove by the Atlanta airport today and realized how much I like planes.

Realistically, when I retire in 25 or 30 years, my goal is to build my own car. I haven't decided yet if this will be a frame off restoration (least likely option), some sort of extensive resto-mod, a kit car, a Se7en, or a vehicle of my own design.

  • Living in Kansas City, there are all sorts of cool events, cool bikes and cars, and cool people that I am too far away from. Can you imagine how many cool Hooniverse posts I could contribute if I was a gypsy blogger, going wherever a neat feature story was to be found?

I'd race. What ever I could get into. Sports cars, Formula cars, Rally cars, Sprint cars, Stock cars, Touring cars, maybe if I could get my licence planes and if the opportunity came up P1 boats.

I really want to race but unfortunately work and living are getting in the way of the plans for that. Some day soon though, I'll be fender to fender or wheel to wheel with others.

If I had enough money to do whatever I wanted, I'd build my company to set up as many people to really accomplish something as possible. If I had enough money to re-shape the world to my whims, I'd found a university.
