Startup: Definitely a Useful Applied Skill

Even if you’re not a video gamer, you’ve probably played Tetris. Hell, even my mom played Tetris (albeit badly). After the jump is a video of someone with “Grand Master” Tetris status. The level of, uh skill? Yeah, we’ll go with skill required is insane. Small spoiler: the last phase makes all of the placed pieces invisible.

Not sure what you would do with such a skill, unless your dream is to be FedEx’s best truck loader.

http://harddrop.com/wiki/Main_Page There is a lot of strategy to tetris. The new versions let you spin pieces and then it never sticks :( Also there are versions that give you pieces as if pulled out of a bag or a deck of cards were shuffled, so you can learn patterns and play forever essentially.

Hmph. He can come sort out my scrap pile.

There is always someone better than me at everything. This is one of those people. I simply cannot compete with that.

I'm not sure how long it took him (or her) to get that good, but he (or she) can never get that time back.

That one gives you a three-block preview, that's not cricket.
I've been playing something called the "tetris fun pack" by Philippe Basciano almost since it came out, I think. It's got Tetris, knockoffs of Dr. Mario (gelules) and Columns (fructus), a hex-based tetris (beetris). You can get them all here, but the best one is PROTO. Tetris with five block pieces. I like it because it's more about minimizing terribleness than being absolutely perfect.

Maybe it isn't cricket, but remember this guy is playing at a level where he can actually use that information instantly, whether he can see the blocks or not… (I always turn preview off, personally.)

Try this one: Retris, a new challenge for Tetris fans.

Can be played with or without sound, but sound is better if you're just beginning. You'll get the hang of it sooner or later, probably much later. I'd give you some tips but that would ruin the fun. I've only scored more than 1000 points on a few occasions.

Ok. Ok, use your arrow keys to move and shift the blocks around the screen. That's all I'm sayin'.
