Startup, Supersonic Transport Week

Startup: Just When You Thought It Was Over

This is the only decent image I can find; if you find more, share them with us!

They tell us Supersonic Transport is dead. Well, perhaps not quite.

Tupolev, not completely discouraged by the dismal performance of its famous Tu-144 Supersonic Transport (also known as the “Concordski”), is apparently now working on a supersonic business jet of its own, the Tu-444. One cannot help but admire the optimism of these aircraft designers, in expecting there will be a serious market for business jets whose price-tags would likely rival those of military aircraft. Indeed, one cannot help but wish that some of this optimism could be demonstrated to those economists who insist that our current financial meltdown is fueled primarily by pessimism. With ambition like this on display, it might be enough to convince those monetary minds to head back to school for a first-year refresher class.

Of course, it’s entirely possible that the economists are right, and these amazing creations have no place in our world today, but there were plenty of people insisting that the Bugatti Veyron would never sell at those prices, and they’ve just released an even-more-expensive special edition. So who knows, maybe there is a possibility that amazing creations like the Tupolev Tu-444 will actually take flight.

I’m not holding my breath, though.

  • I think that if Super Sonics is going to make it, it really needs to be subsidized by other activities. Does the Veyron turn a profit for VW? Super Sonics will probably never be profitable, but if it is part of a major, major player, then maybe it could work? Maybe?

    • It's a shame that Virgin were vetoed from taking Concorde over.

Supersonic travel would look fantastic in Mr Branson's portfolio, nicely filling the gap between Virgin Galactic and Virgin Atlantic.

i have (until now) resisted the urge to post this all week, but it it's been running through my head every time i read an SST article

Am I the only one who hears "Pot USA" every time this band is mentioned?

hehehehe, pretty sure that's why i started listening to them……

  • Richard "Mach Daddy" Branson.

I see now that they've now copied the vortex-generating wing profile in this design.

I dunno, anything Russian scares me ever since somebody posted about the Korean Air 747 that crash-landed in Russian waters. It's like a totally different culture over there, and not very friendly either. I can be impressed with their technology, or at least admire their 'never-give-up' but, man their ideals, and their way of meeting them, messed up (Or, alternatively, I'm crazy and they are normal? Depends on which side you're on. Ok, no more politics.)
